There’s no denying that college football reigns supreme in the South, a sentiment that resonates deeply with the region’s passionate fans. We hold our autumn Saturdays in high regard, which explains our willingness to invest substantial sums to witness our beloved teams in action. Having won a remarkable 17 of the last 20 National Championships, with SEC schools leading the charge, it’s no surprise that we consider ourselves champions in more than just the field of play. But do we also lead in the realm of game-day expenses?
Oddspedia’s latest research reveals that six of the nation’s most costly venues for college football games are located in the South. However, the priciest spot is not in our region. The Colorado Buffaloes topped the list, with an average expenditure of $302 for a pair of spectators. But Southern pride was not far behind, as the Alabama Crimson Tide, a constant championship contender, landed a close second with an average expense of $295 for a full Bryant-Denny Stadium experience.
Other Southern institutions that made the list include the University of Texas at third, the University of Georgia at fifth, the University of South Carolina at seventh, Texas A&M at eighth, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at ninth. Significantly, half of the top 10 most expensive game-day experiences are from one conference: the esteemed SEC. To us, shelling out more for the promise of victory seems a fair trade!
Oddspedia’s methodology for calculating average game-day costs included the average prices of standard purchases, such as two tickets, two sodas, two hot dogs, two beers, and parking. Interestingly, the only expense to decrease from last year was ticket prices, which saw an average drop of 2.7%. Every other category, however, experienced an increase, with parking costs soaring by 18.7%. The UNC Tar Heels experienced the most significant jump in game-day costs, with a 56.1% increase, which we speculate can be attributed to the arrival of a new head coach with a storied NFL background.
While many fans argue that the joy of watching your favorite team secure a victory is priceless, especially during high-stakes rivalry weekends, certain schools offer a more budget-friendly viewing experience. The South once again proved to be a common thread in this category, with seven of the top 10 least expensive game-day experiences being found at Southern schools. The University of Western Kentucky offered the most affordable game day, with an average cost of just $84 for two fans, followed closely by Arkansas State at $88. The University of North Texas, Marshall University in West Virginia, Wake Forest, Jacksonville State University in Alabama, and Tulane in Louisiana also made the list.
This study conclusively demonstrates that whether you’re looking to splurge or find a deal, Southern colleges excel in providing an unforgettable game-day experience.
