The Simple Advice That Changed How I Care For My Everyday Fine Jewelry

  • Regular inspections shield your jewelry from harm and maintain its luster as if it were brand new.
  • Experienced jewelers can identify loose bands or worn mountings before a gemstone goes missing.
  • Abstain from wearing your high-end jewelry while gardening, exercising, or swimming to safeguard it between scheduled maintenance.

Upon the proposal, the thrill of gazing upon a radiant engagement ring on your finger is unparalleled. Like many, I’ve dedicated the first year to nurturing it as one would a newborn. Most jewelers provide the essential guidelines, such as removing your ring during household chores. However, over time, it’s easy to become complacent and overlook certain precautions.

Thankfully, I’ve fostered a strong rapport with the mother-daughter duo at Avani Rupa Fine Jewelers, allowing me to easily pop in for a ring cleaning or inspection when nearby. During one such visit, they imparted a memorable piece of wisdom: “Why not treat your jewelry with the same diligence as your vehicle, which receives regular oil changes and tune-ups?” This insight has led me to view my annual ring checkups as routine as car maintenance, and my jewelry has benefited greatly from this practice.

“Neglecting your ring means compromising its longevity,” asserts Avani Patel, a GIA Graduate Gemologist and co-owner of Avani Rupa Fine Jewelers. “You aim to preserve it forever.”

There are numerous steps you can take to keep your rings in pristine condition, such as regular cleaning and avoiding activities that could damage them. However, without knowing what to look for, you might not notice a loose prong until it’s too late and a gemstone is lost. If your ring has fewer prongs, this vigilance is paramount. “Less gold, less security,” Patel emphasizes. “Gold is crucial for design, but its primary purpose is to secure the stones.”

In our checkups, we inspect for loose diamonds, chips, prongs requiring reconstruction, or the need for additional gold plating. This ensures your rings remain as safe as possible and prevent the loss of any stones. Patel advises, “If you lose something, you might have already needed to schedule a checkup. After all, the cost of a checkup is far less than the value of a lost gemstone.”

There’s also a delightful aspect to bringing your rings in for their checkups. As Patel points out, it’s not just about safety but also about enhancing beauty. “We give your rings a complete polish, leaving them looking as if they’ve just been purchased,” she adds.

It’s important to avoid excessive cleaning, as I’ve heard a story of someone whose engagement ring snapped during a weekly cleaning at a big-box store. Patel warns, “Ultrasonic cleaners may be enticing, but they’re not necessary for frequent use. I recommend every few months, or at home with a gentle cleaner and mild soap.”

Admittedly, I’ve been behind on my annual check-ins, thanks to a busy schedule and the inconvenience of leaving my rings behind for a few weeks. However, writing this article prompted me to visit the store and entrust my jewelry to their care. Not only has my life been hectic, but I’ve also been reluctant to part with my rings for such an extended period.

Ultimately, Patel suggests that an annual visit isn’t always necessary. “The annual checkup is a convenient reminder, but your jeweler can tailor the frequency based on your jewelry’s use,” she explains. “They may advise visiting every 18 to 24 months, or more frequently if you’re a frequent wearer.”

This was my second checkup since my 2020 wedding, and although my rings were safe, a professional cleaning and a touch of extra gold plating transformed them, making me feel like a newlywed once more.
