An uncut pumpkin can maintain its freshness for up to two months when stored in a cool, dimly lit space, such as a basement. Aim to keep the temperature around 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit—extremely cold temperatures can, in fact, harm them. Pumpkins with blemishes or cuts won’t retain their longevity as well. Therefore, when selecting your pumpkin, opt for one that’s free from imperfections and keep it indoors, away from direct sunlight, until you’re ready to begin your carving.
Should you wish to display your autumnal pumpkins outdoors, they’ll endure longer if elevated off the ground and positioned in the shade. A quick wash with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) can significantly extend their freshness.
