How Kendra Scott Is Leaning Into Her Texas Roots By Giving Back To Her Community

Striking a harmonious blend of aesthetic and substance is no easy feat, yet Kendra Scott accomplishes this with a distinctly Texan touch. Over two decades ago, she launched her jewelry line as a young mother crafting pieces from her Austin abode, and she has remained steadfastly true to her Texas heritage. Today, her brand stands as a billion-dollar empire with over 140 outlets, while she has also forged a philanthropic legacy that enriches her Texas community and extends far beyond its borders.

Scott has dedicated herself to nurturing literacy by establishing free “Yellow Libraries” for kids in Texas public schools and nationwide. She also champions heritage craft artisans through collaborations with the nonprofit Nest and its annual Heritage Craft Prize, celebrating the rich culture of her home state within her contemporary Western lifestyle brand, Yellow Rose.

Yellow Rose, Scott’s latest venture, launched in early 2023, is her personal “tribute to Texas.” It offers attire, accessories, and items like bespoke boots and hats, reflecting her deep connection to her family’s ranch in the Hill Country. “The wildflowers that dot my drives and the sunsets I gaze upon from the ranch inspire me,” she explains. “I aim to honor the state I cherish so deeply.”

Partnering with Nest, which connects artisans, retailers, and philanthropies, Scott aspires to sustain and elevate the craft of heritage artisans on the global stage. “Highlighting individuals who excel at extraordinary endeavors benefits us all, enabling us to witness the creation of these products and the preservation of these traditions for future generations,” she asserts. “When I launched Yellow Rose, my intention was to not only showcase my designs but to bring other outstanding artisans into the fold and share their talents.”

This year, Texas artisans were celebrated in the Heritage Craft Prize, with Scott sponsoring a prize for finalists to foster growth and success. Furthermore, a portion of sales from Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott supports Nest’s endeavors.

Amid a tech-driven world where creative pursuits for young people may be scarce, Scott believes her partnership with Nest can ignite creativity. “I want the next generation to realize they can achieve remarkable things with their hands,” she declares. “They can create beautiful items that bring joy to others and explore new ventures.”

Extending beyond creativity, the Kendra Scott Foundation is fostering literacy and reading through the “Yellow Library” initiative, providing resources to students and educators in Texas public schools, aiming to cultivate a bright future for Texas youth.

“Community has immense power, and it can be isolating to start a business,” Scott reflects. “The ability to foster such a community within [Nest] is invaluable. I found solace in joining an entrepreneurial group in Austin when I first began my brand. It was reassuring to be among those facing similar challenges.” In a similar vein, Scott has initiated a women’s entrepreneurship program at the University of Texas at Austin to nurture a community of emerging leaders.

In every collection and cause, Scott is perpetuating the spirit of Texas, blending creativity with community.
