Costco Fans Have Waited Years For This Dessert’s Return—And It’s Finally Here

There’s an age-old saying that absence can indeed make the heart fonder, and for ardent Costco aficionados, this sentiment was on full display when their beloved chocolate cake made a triumphant return. After a lengthy five-year absence, the cherished confection was quietly reintroduced to the warehouse store’s bakery counters in recent times. Just last week, we chanced upon this delightful dessert in our local Birmingham, Alabama Costco, and it was a no-brainer to give it a whirl. After all, sampling products, particularly those rich in chocolate and fudge, is our specialty.

However, this cake isn’t a carbon copy of the older version. Its reappearance has left some customers scratching their heads as to what exactly they’re getting. Let’s dissect the details:

In 2020, Costco bid farewell to their iconic All-American Chocolate Cake, which is still listed on their website but no longer gracing the shelves. The description for the All-American cake boasts a “4 Layer Chocolate Cake; Filled And Iced with Rich Fudge Icing; Chocolate Shavings.”

Presently, we have the Chocolate Fudge Cake, which is reminiscent of the original, yet not a clone of the All-American recipe. A sign in the bakery states that the Chocolate Fudge Cake is a four-layer chocolate cake with fudge filling and a luscious fudge icing.

Without the chocolate shavings and some intricate frosting designs, does that make the new Chocolate Fudge Cake the same? Well, the jury is still out, but social media enthusiasts have shared their perspectives.

“Having sampled both, I can attest that they’re quite comparable,” a Reddit user commented.

Our tasting session in the office yielded a personal anecdote to illustrate the cake’s appeal: By the end of the day, half the cake was gone, and someone had the pleasure of taking the rest home, though it wasn’t me. I would have jumped at the chance.

Another Reddit user exclaimed, “Bro, I devoured that in one sitting and wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ll do it again.”

The Chocolate Fudge Cake, whether it’s a fresh offering or an updated take on the All-American classic, tips the scales at 5.5 pounds and is priced at $24.99. It’s a reasonable cost for the joy it brings.
